Terms of Use – SCC Online Services

Standards Council of Canada (SCC) welcomes you to SCC Connect and SCC’s permissions-based online services. SCC Connect (www.scc.ca/connect) is SCC’s interactive online space, featuring discussion groups and other unique services related to standardization in Canada. Please carefully review these Terms of Use (“TOU” or “Agreement”), as they contain important information regarding the use of this site and its services. The TOU applies to any registered user of SCC’s online services, including SCC Connect.

Legally binding agreement

By registering an account at SCC.ca, you represent and warrant that you have read and understood, and agree to be bound by, the TOU. If you do not agree to the TOU, you are prohibited from registering an account with SCC.

Privacy statement

SCC is committed to providing its visitors with a website that respects their privacy. All personal information provided to SCC is protected under the federal Access to Information & Privacy Act (ATIP). SCC collects your personal information for the purposes of administering SCC Connect and for providing you access to restricted services. You may opt out of receiving emails at any time by changing your notification settings.

Changes

SCC reserves the right to change this agreement at any time. Notice of any significant changes to the TOR will be provided within SCC Connect. It is your responsibility to review this Agreement periodically. If at any time you find any part of this Agreement unacceptable, you must immediately stop using SCC’s permissions-based services, such as SCC Connect.

Disclaimer

As the provider of SCC Connect, SCC is not liable for any statements, representations, or omissions made through your (or other visitors’) content. Any opinions, advice, purported facts, or recommendations expressed therein are those of the visitors who make them, and not those of SCC.  SCC does not endorse any opinion, purported fact, recommendation or advice expressed therein. Likewise, it is your responsibility to exercise due care and caution (for your privacy, safety, and identity, among other concerns) when posting content or accessing SCC Connect.

Member registration

By registering an account with SCC, you certify, represent and warrant that the information you provide is true, accurate, complete, current, and that it belongs to you. You are responsible for monitoring your account, changing your password periodically, and notifying SCC immediately of any unauthorized use or breach of security of your password.

Your user account information is automatically entered into SCC Connect’s member directory, and is visible to all other registered users. 

Code of conduct

All registered users must fully comply with this code of conduct at all times. By registering an account with SCC, you certify, represent and warrant that you will not violate this code of conduct.

Restrictions on inputting information

You shall not add, post, input, or enter illegal or improper information into SCC Connect, including, without limitation, the following:

  • Information that you do not have the necessary rights and/or licenses to enter or that infringes the copyrights or intellectual property rights of others;
  • Information that is false, inaccurate, incorrect, incomplete, inexact, outdated or otherwise wrong;
  • Information subject to confidentiality, non-disclosure, non-competition, trade secret or proprietary rights, limitations or restrictions;
  • Information that is sexually explicit, profane, pornographic, immoral, obscene, vulgar, offensive, inflammatory, violent, dangerous, harmful, threatening, abusive, harassing,  hateful, discriminatory or racially, ethnically or otherwise objectionable;
  • Information that is defamatory, libelous,  fraudulent, knowingly incorrect, or invasive of privacy or publicity rights of others;
  • Information that advocates or encourages conduct that could constitute a criminal offense;
  • Information that is actionable or may subject SCC to legal action or liability of any kind;
  • Information that violates any applicable local, provincial, national or international law or regulation;
  • Information that pertains to advertising or selling a product or service.

Use of information obtained via SCC Connect

You shall not use the information obtained via SCC Connect for any purposes or in any manner that is illegal or improper, including, without limitation, the following:

  • Any purpose or in any manner that is criminal, illegal or actionable;
  • In violation of any local, provincial, national or international laws or regulations;
  • To collect, store, distribute or otherwise process any information related to other members including contact information and email addresses;
  • To communicate with anyone using language or in any manner that is sexually explicit, profane, immoral, obscene, offensive, violent, threatening, abusive, harassing, hateful, discriminatory, or racially, ethnically or otherwise objectionable.

Other forbidden usage and behavior

As a registered user of SCC Connect and SCC’s permissions-based services, you shall not:

  • Share your password or login with any other person;
  • Log onto a server or account that you are not authorized to access;
  • Forge screen names, manipulate identifiers, or otherwise impersonate any other person or misrepresent your identity or affiliation with any person or entity;
  • Violate or attempt to violate any security features of SCC’s online services;
  • Use manual or automated software, devices, scripts robots, other means or processes to access, “scrape,” “crawl” or “spider” any pages contained on SCC.ca;
  • Falsely state or otherwise misrepresent your affiliation with any person or entity;
  • Introduce viruses, worms, software, Trojan horses or other similar harmful code into SCC’s online services;
  • Tamper with the operation, functionality or the security of SCC.ca;
  • Attempt to probe, scan, or test the vulnerability of SCC.ca, or any associated system or network, or breach any security or authentication measures;
  • Engage in “framing,” “mirroring,” or otherwise simulating the appearance or function of any SCC online property.
  • Publicly share information (including documents) obtained through SCC Connect’s private discussion areas or via SCC’s other permissions-based services.

Suspected misuse

SCC will monitor SCC Connect and its online services for misuse. Users are also encouraged to report any suspected violations of these Terms of Use. SCC shall be the sole and final arbiter of suspected violations or misuse. For suspected violations, SCC reserves the right to immediately and without notice:

  • Delete or modify content;
  • Suspend or terminate your account.

Indemnification

You agree to indemnify and hold SCC, its directors, officers and employees, harmless from and against any loss, liability, claim, demand, damages, costs and expenses, including reasonable attorneys' fees (collectively, “Claims”), arising out of or in connection with: (1) your use of SCC online services, including SCC Connect; (2) any violation of this Agreement); (3) your violation of any law or the rights of any third party.

By registering an account with SCC, you agree to abide by these Terms of Use.
